The Paso Districts Collection

Explore the Terroir of Paso Robles

Did you know grapevines, like many other cultivated plants, are grown from 'clones'? At DAOU, we carefully select specific clones of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Each clone of the same grape variety can express particular characteristics, influenced by the conditions in which it’s grown. Daniel Daou, our Chief Winemaker, carefully hand-selects these clones based on their distinct attributes, such as color, tannin structure, and flavor intensity, to create wines that are consistently exceptional and nuanced.
For our exclusive clones series, we isolate a small amount of wine from a single block that displays the best characteristics of a particular clone for that vintage. This process allows us to highlight the unique expression of each clone while ensuring consistency in our final blend. By highlighting these distinct clones, we bring out the best of DAOU’s terroir, as seen in wines like the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate Cabernet Franc. This year, DAOU Vineyards is excited to offer two Cabernet Franc clones for the first time, showcasing the incredible diversity within the varietal.

The Paso Districts Collection and Terroir in Action

One standout example of how terroir influences our wines is the Paso Districts Collection. More than just a series of wines, it's a living lesson in how much terroir truly defines a wine’s expression.

We source Cabernet Sauvignon from two partner growers with two distinct AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) within Paso Robles, Geneseo and Willow Creek, and the difference in each vineyard’s terroir is immediately noticeable in the final wine.

Even when made using the same technique, by the same winemaker, and in the same facility, these wines offer diverse experiences. Such variations are a powerful reminder of how place can profoundly impact a wine’s identity. This journey of regional diversity continues, as we're set to discover different AVAs and vineyards around Paso Robles every two years.

The true distinction of DAOU Mountain's terroir, when compared to other Paso Robles AVAs, is best understood by experiencing the Paso Districts Collection alongside our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
